  'Trails thru Time'-- Doranna Glettig

John and Rebecca (Doyne) Dawson were in Charles County, MD, in the late 1600s. They had 5 sons: Nicholas, Edward, John, Thomas and Charles. Nicholas, married Mary Doyne, c. 1704, and he also had 5 sons: John, Thomas, William, George, & Nicholas. Nicholas (the father) owned several tracts of land, but he & Mary lived on the plantation "Saturday's Work" in Maryland for most of their lives.

Son Nicholas inherited the plantation "Sligo".  He married Sarah Edelen and they had at least 2 sons: George and Richard.  George married Martha Rowlands, a widow.  Their children were John, William, Sarah and Amelia Lee.  George and Martha and family migrated to Frederick Co., VA, as early as 1798.

John Dawson, married Sarah A. Farmer in 1803.  In 1805, son George was born near Winchester, Frederick Co., VA.  There were other children, as yet unidentified. After the 1810 census,  John and Sarah went to the Virginia Panhandle, to Monongalia County, VA (later WV).  Source: L.O. Dawson  "Through Three Centuries with a Dawson Family"

In 1827, George  married Sarah Priest, daughter of John Priest of Fayette Co., PA.  John is thought to be a son of Absolom and Catherine (Hare) Priest of Philadelphia, PA. George and Sarah lived in Fayette Co., PA, from sometime before the 1830 census until after June 1838.  The 1840 census finds them in Guernsey Co., OH. and then Muskingum Co. OH. In 1850, they were in Van Buren Co., Iowa, and shortly thereafter settled in Marion Co., IA. Where they stayed and farmed.  George died 1874 and Sarah in 1883.

Children:  John Hartford, Minerva Jane, Mary Elizabeth, George Rider, Eli Franklin and James Presley.  Minerva Jane married Eliphaz Haning; Mary Elizabeth married Perry Shank, then Joseph Dalton.  John married Martha Burdette, then Margaret McCollum.  George R. married Nancy Anderson, Catherine Burt and Catherine Copenhaver.  James Presley died from typhoid shortly after his enlistment in the Civil War.

Eli Franklin married Maria Jane Cody, dau of Austin and Louisa (Parish) Cody in Marion Co., IA.  Children born to Eli and Maria are: Ida Elzada, Elma Belle, James P., Edward F., Eva Almira, Arty B., Minnie O. and Leona.

Above, left:  Could be George Dawson, c, 1870,  and Sarah (Priest) Dawson, c, 1875; at right,  Maria Jane (Cody) Dawson and Eli Franklin Dawson, c. 1875.  After George died in  1874, Sarah made her home with Eli and Maria. Sarah died 1883 in Marion Co., IA.  Maria died 1898 in Mills Co., IA at age 55;  Eli died in Council Bluffs, IA, in 1916.

Thought to be James, John and George R. Dawson  --  about the time they enlisted in the 40th Iowa Infantry in August 1862. Two brothers-in-law enlisted with at the same time-- Ashley Cody and Eliphaz Haning-- I believe this picture to be 3 of the 5 mentioned….the 2 seated I'm sure are brothers--they look a lot alike.
