Doranna's History Trivia

Doranna's Home Page

Jeffrey Champlin is believed to have been born near Bideford (Devonshire) England, circa 1621.  He died at Westerly, RI, sometime between 1688 and 1695.  He married Eulalia Vladi Garde, the daughter of John Garde and Rebecca Copp.  She was baptised in 1632, and died 1656-1657.  Jeffrey and Eulalia had 3 known children: Jeffrey, William and Christopher.

Christopher was born  1656 in Newport, RI, and died in 1732 at Westerly, RI.  His first wife (name unk) was mother to all the children: Christopher, John, William, Jeffrey, Joseph, Mary Ann.

Christopher, Jr., was born at Westerly, RI, in 1684, and died there in 1734.  He married Elizabeth Dennison in 1705; they had 12 children: Christopher, Joseph, Elijah, Ann, George, Elizabeth, Thankful, Lydia, Elijah, Jabez, Oliver and Mary.

Joseph Champlin was born at Westerly, RI, in 1709, and died in  CT in 1792. During the Revolution, he melted his silver plate to aid the "cause" and his home at Westerly was used as a refuge for patriots. Joseph.s 2nd wife, Mary Noyes, had 9 children: Charles Noyes, Mary, William, Temperance, Sarah, Rebecca, Joseph, Oliver and Elizabeth.

Joseph Champlin, son of Joseph and Mary, was born c 1765 at Westerly, RI, and died 1849 in VT.  He married Mercy Sisson; they had 7 children: Robert, William Sisson, Lucy, Maria, Lorena Sophronia, Erastus, Frederick P.

William Sisson Champlin  was born 1794 in either VT or NH.  He died at Lehi, UT, in 1861.  An early convert to Mormonism, William took part in the great migration to the Promised Land (Utah) along with Brigham Young and John Smith.  He married Mary Ring in 1826.  Mary was born MA in 1794 and died in UT in 1871.  William and Mary had 9 children: Sophronia, Reuben Alonzo, Angeline Alvida, William Jefferson, Joseph Albert, Mary Jane, Margaret Emma, Maria Laverna and Erastus.

The Champlin family were among the group of Mormons who were attacked in the Haun's Mill Massacre in Missouri.  The Mormons had voluntarily disarmed the day before, then the soldiers came back the next day and opened fire. The Champlins were the only family to escape without injury.  It had been no battle but a massacre.  Women sobbing, children crying loudly, dogs howling over their dead masters, cattle terrified with the scent of blood.   (My thanks to Robert Champlin for sharing his research.)

Mary Jane Champlin was born 1830 in PA and died in ID in 1906. She married Stuart Dickson in 1849 in IA.  Stuart was born 1827 in Canada and died in ID in 1911.  Stuart and Mary Jane had 8 children: William Stewart, Mary Sophronia,  Sarah Maria, Adelaide Avilda, Albert Henry, Samantha Jane, Lucy Helen and Joanna Susanna.

In 1853 Stuart and Mary Jane, with infant son William Stuart,  made the trek from Kanesville, IA, to the Salt Lake Valley in Utah.
